In 2021, a federal grand jury indicted Amandeep Multani for international drug trafficking. The charges against him might have resulted in life in prison and up to $10 million in fines. But, thanks to Federal Criminal Defense Attorney Allen Sawyer, Multani has been given a sentence of time served and was released without penalty.

In April 2021, Amandeep Multani, a 34-year-old local trucking company owner and resident of Roseville, was accused by a federal grand jury of selling narcotics to a Canadian undercover officer between October 2020 and March 2021. Alongside two other California men, Multani was charged with possession and conspiracy to distribute cocaine, opium, ketamine, and heroin.

The case against Multani developed from a 2020 Drug Enforcement Agency investigation that grew to involve the FBI and Homeland Security as well as Canada’s York Regional Police, the Placer County Special Investigations Unit, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Multani and his codefendants, Parampreet Singh, 55, of Davis, and Ranvir Singh, 42, of Sacramento, faced life in prison and upwards of $10 million in fines.

Multani’s first move was to contact The Law Offices of Allen Sawyer and secure Allen Sawyer as his federal criminal defense attorney.

Bolstered by Sawyer’s know-how and advice, on Dec. 13, 2022, Multani pled guilty to the charges against him and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors in their case against his codefendants.

“At this point there was still a possibility of a multiple-year prison sentence,” said Sawyer. “My client signed a cooperation agreement where he potentially could get up to 15 years.”

In the three years that elapsed between his client’s guilty plea and his sentencing, Sawyer advised Multani during the cooperation process, including all testimony given by Multani in court. Thanks to the value of cooperation Multani provided under Sawyer’s guidance, at his Nov. 18 sentencing Multani was given a sentence of time served (four years), and was released with no fine or penalties.

“This was a very gratifying end to a long process,” said Sawyer. “What you should strive for as a federal defense attorney is to listen, prepare well, and utilize every possible resource to arrive at the best strategy possible. In Mr. Multani’s case, we got a fantastic result.”

What to Look for in a Drug Trafficking Defense Attorney

Defendants facing charges like drug importation, conspiracy, and distribution across borders need an experienced federal criminal defense attorney with a proven track record in federal drug cases.  Your federal criminal defense attorney should have the following abilities:

  • Navigating complex federal court procedures
  • Dealing with powerful agencies like the DEA and FBI
  • Combating illegal searches/seizures/wiretaps or unreliable testimonies
  • Familiarity with international law
  • Negotiating reduced charges/sentencing and plea bargains

On Sept. 9, Parampreet Singh pled guilty to the charges against him. His sentencing will come in January 2026. Ranvir Singh’s jury trial ended in a conviction on all counts.

“At one point Mr. Multani was facing life in prison,” said Sawyer. “Now he’s been released without fine or penalty. We’re extremely happy for him.”
